About the press
Small enough to care about every book.
Our story
A small press with room for unusual books.
Obscuritas Press was established by writer John R. D. Taylor as an independent home for his own work.
What began as a practical means of publishing independently gradually became something more interesting: an opportunity to create books without forcing them into someone else's idea of what they ought to be.
The press remains deliberately small. Its catalogue ranges across poetry, short fiction, professional and academic writing and selected creative projects, united less by genre than by independence of thought.
We believe a small press should do a few things well: take writing seriously, treat authors fairly, make books attractive objects, communicate clearly and never mistake size for significance.
Some books need a large publishing house. Others simply need someone to believe they should exist.
Thoughtful writing.
Careful design.
Books to be kept.
Obscuritas also offers selected publishing services to independent authors who want professional help bringing their own work into print.

What matters to us
Distinctive voices
We value originality and independent thought over fitting neatly into a fashionable category.
Fair and supportive
We believe authors and clients should know what is happening, what it costs and who owns what.
Books that last
Good writing deserves good presentation. Design is part of the reading experience, not an afterthought.
